Norsk:

English:
Polar bears are animals which know no boundaries. They pad across the ice from Russia to Alaska, from Canada to Greenland and onto Norway's Svalbard archipelago. No adequate census exists on which to base a worldwide population estimate, but biologists use a working figure of perhaps 22,000 to 25,000 bears with about sixty percent of those living in Canada. Polar bears are extremely adapted to the arctic. Winter temperatures in the far north often plunge to -40° F or -50° F and can stay that way for days or even weeks.

Norsk:

The commonest species of seal around Svalbard are the ringed seal, the bearded seal, the common seal and the walrus. The ringed seal, which is the smallest species of seal, inhabits the fjords and drift-ice. This is the commonest seal on Svalbard. Harp seals and hooded seals are also occasionally observed. The most important predator is the polar bear. Other, rarer, predators are the walrus, the killer whale and the greenland shark.

English:
Arctic ice can be divided into two different types, classified by their method of formation. Icebergs are chunks of floating ice that have "calved" (broken off) from a glacier. Since they are formed from compacted snow, they are composed entirely of fresh water, like big floating ice cubes. The other kind of arctic ice is pack ice. This kind of ice is formed by the freezing of seawater. Seawater, because of the salt it contains, freezes in a different manner compared to fresh water. The density of seawater steadily increases as it cools, until reaching the freezing point of around -2°C (although this depends on how salty the water is). Mariners have adopted a number of different names for icebergs and pack ice.
Anchor ice, blue ice, close pack ice, compact pack ice, consolidated pack ice, fast ice, fast-ice boundary, fast-ice edge, first-year ice, floe, floeberg, glacier ice, glaze, grease ice, grounded ice, growler, iceberg, ice-blink, icefoot, lead, nilas, nipped, old ice, open pack ice, pancake ice, polynya, rafted ice, rotten ice, sea ice, stranded ice. tabular iceberg and very close pack ice

Norsk:

English:
The walrus has a circumpolar arctic distribution. There are two subspecies, the atlantic and the pacific walrus. The total population is estimated to be a maximum of 250,000 animals, where 80% er pacific walrus. The walrus is the largest species of seal in Norway, with males weighing up to 1300 kg. Walrus live mainly off bottom-living animals such as mussels and other shells. The walrus prefers drift-ice areas where it can drag itself up out of the sea and rest on the floes. After the ice has disappeared the walrus have fixed restplaces that they return to. Walrus are social animals and often collect in groups. They have few enemies. Killer whales are significant predators in some areas and polar bears take occasional animals.

Norsk:

English:
Around 30 different species of bird nest on Spitzbergen during the short arctic summer. Most species are summer visitors, making the most of the energy from the rich phyto- and zooplankton production for reproduction and building up fat stores.

One of the birds that migrates the furthest is the arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea). It nests in the arctic and overwinters in ocean regions in the southern hemisphere, some as far south as Antarctica.

Norsk:

Spitzbergen has an array of spectacular and unusual landscapes. Over half of the island group is covered by glaciers and eternal snow, and the landscape has been, and is still being, shaped by glaciers. There are rugged alpine mountain landscape and nunataks, huge plateau glaciers and valley glacier systems, wide fjords surrounded by mountains and with glaciers that calve directly into the sea, wide passes with old riverbeds, river plains and wetlands, sweeping beaches with dunes, and lake landscapes.
